A WORD FROM THE FEMALE VETERAN DIRECTOR

About Unconventional Veterans

This documentary series follows former service members rebuilding their lives after military service through self reliance and community driven healing. Rather than focusing on war, the series examines what happens after service, when veterans search for purpose, stability, and identity in civilian life.

The project arrives at a time when veteran mental health remains a national concern. Many former service members struggle with depression, anxiety, isolation, and reintegration challenges. Traditional systems do not always reach everyone who needs support. In response, veterans across the country are creating their own networks of healing and mentorship.

The story moves through environments where veterans are redefining reintegration on their own terms. Around the nation, veterans reconnect with the land through regenerative agriculture and plant medicine. For instance, along the North East, Marine veteran Hamilton Garces guides participants through sound, breath, and ancient healing practices that help people reconnect with their bodies and minds.

These narratives reveal the quiet work of rebuilding life after service. Veterans face mental health challenges, identity shifts, and the difficulty of returning to a society that often misunderstands military transition. Instead of framing veterans through trauma or pity, the series highlights resilience, self governance, and community led solutions. A new narrative to today’s US Veteran

Unconventional Veterans documents these grassroots solutions and the people building them. The production also reflects this mission by opening the majority of crew opportunities to veterans, creating a filmmaking environment shaped by lived experience.

By shifting the narrative away from combat and toward reconstruction, the series presents a new perspective on life after service and offers a grounded model of resilience, leadership, and renewal.
